WHEATING
Why people do it, what you get for it, and how to get rid of all the wheat!!
We all know that people grow lots and lots and lots of wheat - we see it selling in the newspaper all the time. And it can be pretty annoying when you're looking for apple jam or planks, but the paper is full of nothing but wheat! And it's selling really cheaply!!! 10 wheat for 36c, or 10c or even 1c. There must be a good reason for growing it, right?
Firstly, you will never get rich selling wheat But on the other hand it costs you nothing to grow it, so even at 1c for 10, it's a profit. But that's not why people grow wheat - they do it for the bonus items. Bolts, planks, screws, axes, saws etc....and sometimes also land deeds, mallets and marker stakes. It helps if you understand how the heyday software is setup to give those nice rewards.
For harvesting of crops (any crops that you can grow in a field, not just wheat - so pumpkins, sugarcane etc too), the system is setup to give you a reward for every 68 fields you harvest. You can try this out for yourself if you want. Set aside exactly 68 fields for your experiment, and plant them completely with one crop - anything. When they have all ripened, harvest the whole lot, and you will get one bonus item as a reward. Every time your harvest your 68 fields........
In the end if comes down to simple maths why people choose wheat to grow for getting the bonus items.....it's the fastest crop from planting to harvest! If you sell it at 1c per 10, you will get a very small income, but it will sell fast, and making money is NOT the goal here. Try it for yourself. You might also find that, at certain times of the day, your wheat sells faster, and you can get away with a higher price too.
Apart from selling it cheaply, there are a few other ways you can get rid of your excess wheat. Making bread is a good one - it's quick to make, and is very popular for those boat orders that want 4 crates of 17 breads!!! Townies in the Grocery store often want a lot of bread too.....maybe they have restaurants....
But there's another way you might not think about........and that's encouraging your "walkers" to buy it. The "walkers" are the name I give to the people who walk up to your farm door. Tom and Mike and the lady with the umbrella and the little girl shopping for her grandma.....you know the ones. Walkers are not confined to buying in lots of 10, they can buy as much as they want to....and they pay a good price....not top price, but much better than 1c per 10! But how do you get them to ask for wheat, and not for strawberries? You might have noticed that the walkers always ask for either the thing you have most of in your silo, or for the things you have none of. They also usually ask for about 35-60% of the thing you have most of. So if you have 120 wheat in your silo, you could sell 72 wheat in a single sale....and at a good price. The trick is to make sure your barn has at least 1 of every other crop (not 0), and keep those other crops under about 10 for each one. And then fill up the rest of the silo with wheat........ It will be sold in no time. See the picture below!
Some people believe that other crops, e.g. sugarcane, give you better bonus items. I really can't agree or disagree - I think the bonus items are pretty random, but the rarest items like marker stakes seem to come in waves, regardless of what you're growing - so I stick to wheat when I'm chasing something like planks or markers. Yes, I do get a lot of things I don't want.....anyone need wood panels? But I also get axes and saws I do use, and I can sell off the other things at a really good return. I don't hoard them.
So.......happy wheating.........and if you have some more tips, please share them!!!!! Frenchie0z
